Sara and I arrived into a small airport near Milan in the evening on Thursday (May 30). I had not realized how mountainous it would be. It made for a scenic bus ride to the central station. The central station in Milan is in a huge, beautiful old building. We took the metro to our hostel and just stayed in for the rest of the night.
We only spent one day in Milan, which is really all we needed. I was not very impressed with the city. The most impressive part was the Duomo. It was magnificent. We did not end up going inside, but I'm sure that was just as grand. We mostly just walked around the city. Not far from the Duomo was a castle where we discovered a gelato festival going on later in the day and a nice park. We met up with Alberto, a friend Sarah Ferguson and I had met on our Barcelona trip. He studies in Milan and lives about 20 min outside the city. He is very sweet and is always apologizing for his English. I have never once complained about his English. Of course it is not perfect, but he is very easy to understand. The only times we have troubles is when he is trying to explain something specific and even then it's almost like a game to guess what he's trying to say.
One interesting thing we did see during our time in Milan was a funeral procession. From what I understand it was for a theater performer who was well known. Everyone was wearing red and carrying roses.
We said goodbye to Milan that afternoon and headed to Treviso.
Sara and I decided we are both glad we started in Milan since it was our least favorite city.
