I just got back from a very nice walk. It's May 1st and it's actually starting to feel like Spring. I've heard some Norwegians say that it isn't usually like this; it should be warmer. It occurred to me that I haven't really explored much around my student village, so I think that is what I will try to do on my walks. Today I walked to the roundabout where the bus stop is and walked down Kongleveien (pretty that means King Street-but not positive). I basically took three different levels downward, so I had quite the climb the way back up. It looked pretty similar to a lot of places around here-red, yellow, blue, green, brown wooden houses, some with tiled driveways, others with big stacks of wood out in front, some with pretty pansies planted in pots outside the doors. I met a few cats a long the way, as well as some fellow walkers. May 1 is a public holiday around here-something like Labor Day I think. This is one of the reasons I took such a long walk-nothing else is open (gym, grocery store, etc) so my day is pretty free. Sarah I are thinking movie marathon later. It's my week to clean the kitchen though, so that has to be done first.
Monday was maybe the worst weather I have seen in Oslo. I woke up to the rain coming down pretty hard and it rained on and off all day. At one point it was down-pouring and the wind was blowing. Awful. I stayed inside that day. Sarah was downtown though. Her friend Julia came to visit and they were sightseeing. They went to Bergen this past weekend too. Julia goes to university with Sarah in Canada, but she is currently studying in the Netherlands (some city that starts with an N). We are actually staying with her when we go to Amsterdam in a few weeks. She's a great person, very fun and easy to get along with. I'm excited to be visiting her again.
Last night was the first night of our "Rock Step 2.5" dance course. This one's on a volunteer basis by the instructors so it's free! There weren't as many people there of course and definitely not enough guys but it was fun and we learned some new things. I'm going to try to get a video of me dancing.
In baking news: While Julia was here I wanted to make cookies but she is gluten-free so I tried a recipe for peanut butter cookies that was just peanut butter, sugar, egg, baking soda, and salt (and I added chocolate chips). They were so good! And they didn't fall apart or anything while they were baking. They looked like normal cookies. I was impressed. Then yesterday I decided to make coffee cake. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing but it tastes excellent. No baking today though. I used all my sugar up yesterday :( and the grocery stores are closed today, so I'm surviving on what I have for now.
Next Wed is my first final exam, so I am starting to prepare for that. May is just going to fly by. And then only a month until I'll be home! Why is it that the human brain has such a hard time perceiving the passage of time?
Well, I guess I should get on with my day. Have a lovely Wednesday everyone. I hope you all have nice weather and have time to enjoy it (there's that time thing again)! xxxx
