Today Sarah, Lara, Joschka and I had a planned "study day." We went to the Blindern campus around ten and found a table in the library. The library study tables are verrrrry nice. Each spot has a lamp attached to the table, and you have two outlets built into the desk. The only problem was the head of my laptop charger plug was too big to fit in the slot so my laptop ended up dying :( And the internet was a bit temperamental when I was trying to use it. Anyway, the desks are really spacious (good for me!) and the chairs are pretty comfy. We ate lunch at a cafe in the same building. I had Indian curry soup and it was deeeelicious. I forget how much I really love Indian food until I eat it. There's been talk of going to an Indian restaurant sometime soon since they seem to be cheaper than regular restaurants. I was looking up recipes to make chicken tikka masala the other day but there are so many ingredients. I may just have to wait until I'm home for that. But I am going to attempt to make naan one of these days.
The reeeeeallly exciting news is that I received my first package today!!!! My mother did an excellent job (see picture below). It's basically all food, except for a scarf I asked for...some Cap'n Crunch, cereal bars, candy, rice side dishes, muffin mix, oatmeal, hot chocolate and tea packets (thank you to Sean's Grandma Sticek for the Swiss Miss caramel flavor). I'm a little concerned about how long I can actually make the candy last. I'm not very good at rationing.
Another great thing about today was the dinner that I made. I had planned all week to make chicken (since I haven't really ate much meat here) and I decided on a pasta dish. It was basically penne pasta with an white sauce made with ranch dressing, chicken, and cheese that was baked for 15 minutes in the oven. The recipe called for bacon-which I know would have made the dish that much better-but bacon is a little pricey and I don't eat it very much to buy a whole pack.
The first picture is just hot chocolate I made the other night and I put some bananas in instead of marshmallows (I like to document any cooking experiments I try). What I did not document was the banana "ice cream" that I attempted yesterday night. I found some recipes online claiming you could make banana ice cream from frozen bananas that would be very close to the consistency of actual banana ice cream. All of the recipes called for a food processor or a blender, but I found one person that used a ziploc bag and just mashed it up. That's what I ended up doing. We do have a hand blender here (never seen anything like it) but it was leaky weird brown liquid so I switched to the baggie method. Overall definitely not the same consistency. It definitely would have worked better with an actual blender. I did put some milk and peanut butter in so it was tasty. I'm not sure how often I would make it without the right equipment though.
Another exciting piece of news-I learned to knit yesterday! Sarah and I signed up for a free class that was sponsored by the special events committee. It was run by two Norwegian students and there were eight of us taking it. Two of us had knitted before and the rest were beginners (including me). I don't think the students were prepared to have to explain much about the technicalities of knitting, and I don't think they expected so many of us to need constant supervision. I got pretty frustrated for the majority of the session, only to find out that I had been putting my needle through the wrong hole when I finally asked the instructor to watch me do it. Anyway, if you looked at what I have now you could definitely tell it's knitting (just not very good knitting). I was working on it last night when I watched a movie and I got a couple more rounds in. For some reason though my number of loops keeps growing. It think I'm up to almost fifty and I have no idea why!!! Sarah is doing really good with her knitting, and is really enjoying it! She's already made one leg warmer and a headband. (She's actually sitting in my room knitting as I type this). I'm not sure what I'm going to make mine into. It's definitely too wide for a headband and I don't think I have the patience for a scarf. I was thinking maybe a tea cup cozie, or a dish cloth, or a leg warmer. Maybe it will just be a knitted square and I will find a use for it.
I hope you enjoyed my blog for the day. I definitely enjoyed writing to you all :) I love when I have fun things to share. I often find myself thinking throughout the day how I will present something I did in my blog later. Well, talk to you soon. Have a wonderful Friday!
